Unique in their field, Altas Lens Co. makes affordable lenses for film and TV. As their business scaled up they needed a larger space that could serve more than just fabrication. Moving from an unremarkable and windowless building stacked to the rafters with product, they wanted to create a multipurpose space that would allow them to design and create their lenses while adding an inviting environment for both clients cultivation and product testing.

Once a dark maze of corridors and small rooms, we worked with their team to open up a former printing facility, leveraging the large footprint of the warehouse with spatial design based on Atlas’ daily processes and opportunities for growth. We landed on an airy, flexible space defined by exposed framing and bathed in natural light for the front of house where design, collaborative meetings, and client contact can occur. Each office and shared working space is now connected to the outdoors through strategically placed windows and skylights that lend a noticeably cinematic play of light and shadow. All are organized around a central raised mezzanine that we created as the heart of the house, giving their team room to gather organically around the chance interactions that often lead to creative breakthroughs. A kitchen lounge provides a separate space for meals and down time. Now all of Atlas’ operations are run through their new location – from design and fabrication at the back of house, to the working set we developed where directors and their cinematographers can come to set and test their lenses right on location.
