The Gateway to Paso Robles

Nestled along Central California’s wine trail, Paso Robles is a historic town with a burgeoning foodie and hand crafted scene. For decades the site that will become the Paso Market Walk has sat in disrepair, its original Gothic Carpenter home flagging from neglect and long ago planted vines still creeping along. So when developer Deborah Baldwin came to M+ looking for an architectural vernacular that would marry Paso’s historic cache with the up and coming energy of the region’s newest standouts in food and wine, we got excited.

Using the urban planning principles of nodes and paths, we created clear intersecting walkways that lead from the street through large rolling doors into the market hall. Maintaining the prevailing roof heights and undulations of the surrounding residential neighborhood, we pushed the ceiling height on the ground level buildings to conjure utilitarian barn structures and added warmth and community appeal with central gathering spaces under mature oak trees. Featuring a careful restoration of its Victorian home, short stay suites, restaurant, brewery, a sophisticated marketplace of local purveyors, and family-friendly outdoor spaces, this mixed-use development is well on its way to giving residents and travelers the opportunity to taste the distinctive flavor of the Central Coast.
